Stokstad writes, "Squinches are lintels supported on bracketlike constructions placed across the walls’ upper corners." With each shelf-like lintel projecing beyond the one immediately below, squinches fill in corners of a square or polygonal room to support a dome. it’s also a verb for a squint.
