One of the most peculiar objects in Symbols of Power is a cup in the shape of a woman’s breast. The catalogue’s curator, Odile Nouvel-Kammerer, notes that the cup’s theme is traceable to ancient Greece, evoking the abundance and generosity of mother earth. The ca.1810 Sevres cup was made from a mold of the breast of Pauline Borghese, Napoleon’s most frivolous sister. We wonder how many frivolous sisters Napoleon had.
